07.01.06 - Dominique Rollin (Boucherville, QC) is National Champion in the Men Elite's Road Race! Svein Tuft (BC) 2d, Dominique Perras (QC) 3rd.
Local star David Veilleux (Cap Rouge, QC) top U23 and Mark Breton (Charlesbourg, QC) LC1 National Champion

Québec City (QC), July 1, 2006 - Dominique Rollin of Boucherville, QC, achieved an outstanding race on Canada Day as he took the National Road Champion title on the 196 km road race. Local rider David Veilleux from Cap-Rouge, Québec, earned his second U23 Canadian Champion title of the event, while Mark Breton (Charlesbourg, QC) secured his 4 th consecutive title in the handisport category.

In the morning, the handisport categories opened the Tim Hortons National Championships 42-km road race and local rider Mark Breton, 34, of Charlesbourg, QC (Équipe du Québec), won the Canadian Champion title in the LC1 category.

"I'm proud to have succeeded in securing my title for the fourth year in a row," said the passionate cyclist who had finished 5 th in the time trial and 10 th in the road race at the 2004 Olympic Games.

Other Canadian Champions crowned in their respective category were Stéphane Chaput, QC (CP category), Robert Labbé of Équipe du Québec (HCA category), and Gene de la Siega (Team Saskatchewan, BC) in Tandem.

The Elite/U23 and men's race offered a super show as the suspense lasted till the end of the14-lap,12.5 km circuit. Québec's Rollin won the final sprint to cross the finish line in first with a time of 4'30 ",on Tuft who worked with him for a long time on the breakaway.

"I was there to win,"said Rollin with a big smile," so you must always have some more energy to put into the battle. I struggled hard against the current time trial Champion (Svein Tuft). It confirms what I am able to give and will certainly open doors for me in the future."

Kevin Cuninghan, the Symetrics team owner of Svein Tuft (Langley, BC), who took the second place, added "Rollin did a super race. Svein is really disappointed because our goal was the National Champion jersey, but tactically we played the race exactly as we planned."

Dominique Perras of St-Lambert, QC (Kodakgallery.com/SierraNevada) commented:"I felt good after the two first laps and started to attack but I got cramps. However I succeeded in maintaining a good position in the breakaway. Would the hills be shorter, I could have attacked harder and make it to the National Champion title I aimed at because I am a good climber! After a disappointing beginning of season, I feel more confident now."

David Veilleux (Équipe du Québec) arrived in fifth overall and is top U23. He escaped the peloton very aggressively after lap 10 and chased the breakaway, succeeding in placing 5 th overall and top Espoir. The second U23, Christian Meier of Langley, BC, placed 6 th overall, he was followed by Jamie Lamb (NS) in third U23. "I'm so proud I rode aside the best guys I have been watching for the last couple of years, " said Veilleux. When I joined the leaders, I said to myself it must not be the breakaway but some riders who dropped instead, but I was well and truly riding alongside Perras, Rollin and Wolhberg!"

Ryder Hesjedal (Team Phonak) and François Parisien (Team TIAA-CREF QC) among other did not finish the race.
