07.07.07 - 2007 Tim Hortons Road Nationals - Ontario riders earn three Masters titles

Montreal, July 7, 2007 (Sportcom) – Ontario riders took three Masters titles on Saturday at the 2007 Tim Hortons Road Nationals cycling competition at St-Georges de Beauce. The winners were Jonathan Wood (Masters A 30-39 years-old), Kevin Davis (Masters B 40-49) and Charlie Squires (Masters C 50-59).

In the 60+ age category, John Sullivan of B.C., posted his second win at the nationals. The Vancouver Velo Vets team member edged Greg Brown of Ontario in the 60 kilometre race. He also won the time trial.

In women’s competition, winners were Michelle Paiement of Quebec (Masters 30-39) and Joanne Breau of Alberta (Masters 40 and over).

Wood was jumping for joy.

‘’I’ve won about three races in my life, so to take a Canadian title is fantastic,’’ said Wood, still a member of the Edmonton Road and Track Club even though he’s resided in Toronto the past two years. ‘’Our team tactic was to stay with the pack at the start of the race. Some of my teammates, including my brother Daniel, made some breakaways. In the last lap, I had a gut feeling the breakaway could crown the winner. I broke free from the pack with a group of riders and we were able to reel in the leaders with three kilometres to go.’’

Sébastien Pilotte of Quebec made an attack on the last climb but it was countered by Wood.

‘’The other riders hesitated. It gave me enough time to hold on until the finish. I even celebrated before the finish line,’’ said Wood who lauded the work of his brother Daniel and teammate Jeff McDonald.

Competition continues Sunday with the junior and paracycling road races.
