OFFENBURG, Germany – Marie-Hélène
Prémont of Chateau-Richer, Que., won the silver
medal on Sunday in the women’s cross country race
at the second stop on the mountain bike World Cup circuit.
World champion Irina Kalentieva of Russia took the
gold medal in two hours and 00.19 minutes with Prémont
finishing 33 seconds behind the winner. Ren Chengyuan
of China, last week’s season-opening winner, was
third 1:20 behind the Russian. The race consisted of
six 5.1 kilometre laps with two short start loop laps.
For Prémont, the Olympic silver medallist in
2004, it was her second medal this season. She was third
at last week’s World Cup in Houffalize, Belgium.
‘’It was another good ride for me,’’
Prémont told canadiancyclist.com. ‘’I
am still improving and getting stronger. Hopefully I
will get the win I did not get last year. That is my
goal for this season.’’
Pleasant weather conditions made for a very dry and
fast track.
‘’I prefer it when it is wetter and the
ground is a little more slippery,’’ Prémont
said.
CathArine Pendrel of Kamloops, B.C., took eighth spot,
Kiara Bisaro of Courtenay, B.C., was 18th, Wendy Simms
of Nanaimo, B.C., 22nd, Sandra Walter of Victoria 28th,

Ont., 37th, Alison Sydor of Victoria 41st and Amanda
Sin of Wolfville, N.S., 50th out of 119 riders.
''I had a strong start,'' said Pendrel. ''I got a good
position and avoided the traffic. I realized I had to
ride my own race to make sure that I could have a better
finish.''
In the men’s race held on the same course over
seven laps, Julien Absalon of France took the gold for
the second straight week with Christoph Sauser and Florian
Vogel, both o Switzerland, second and third respectively.

in ninth, 14 spots better than last week, while Geoff
Kabush of Victoria was 19th. Derek Zandstra of Trenton,
