05.09.08 - Canada’s Svein Tuft wins third gold at Pan Am cycling championships

May 9, 2008– MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay- Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., is on a roll in the track portion of the Pan American Cycling Championships.

Tuft collected his third gold medal on Wednesday with a victory in the Madison race teaming up with Zach Bell of Watson Lake, Yukon. Tuft also won the points race Tuesday and the individual pursuit race on Monday.

In the Madison, Tuft and Bell totalled 32 points winning the final four of the eight sprints. A Chilean pair was second at 25 and Colombia third at 13.

‘’Zach and Svein controlled the race from start to finish,’’ said Canadian team manager Denise Kelly. ‘’The executed exchanges flawlessly throughout the race.’’

The points race was all decided in the final sprint. Tuft earned 63 points with Daniel Halloway of the U.S., second at 59 and Antonio Cabrera of Chile third at 55. Bell was also in the medal hunt finishing fourth at 44.

‘’Zach was an integral part of Svein’s win,’’ said Kelly. ‘’Zach won four of the first eight sprints and was a marked rider. In the final sprint, Svein stayed calm, drew even with Halloway and his momentum carried him through.’’

Competition on the track ends Thursday with the Omnium. The road events get underway Friday.
