Svein Tuft wins third gold at Pan Am cycling championships
May 9, 2008– MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay- Svein Tuft
of Langley, B.C., is on a roll in the track portion
of the Pan American Cycling Championships.
Tuft collected his third gold medal on Wednesday with
a victory in the Madison race teaming up with Zach Bell
of Watson Lake, Yukon. Tuft also won the points race
Tuesday and the individual pursuit race on Monday.
In the Madison, Tuft and Bell totalled 32 points winning
the final four of the eight sprints. A Chilean pair
was second at 25 and Colombia third at 13.
‘’Zach and Svein controlled the race from
start to finish,’’ said Canadian team manager
Denise Kelly. ‘’The executed exchanges flawlessly
throughout the race.’’
The points race was all decided in the final sprint.
Tuft earned 63 points with Daniel Halloway of the U.S.,
second at 59 and Antonio Cabrera of Chile third at 55.
Bell was also in the medal hunt finishing fourth at
44.
‘’Zach was an integral part of Svein’s
win,’’ said Kelly. ‘’Zach won
four of the first eight sprints and was a marked rider.
In the final sprint, Svein stayed calm, drew even with
Halloway and his momentum carried him through.’’
Competition on the track ends Thursday with the Omnium.
The road events get underway Friday.
