04.29.10 - Eastern development
camp : glimpse on the future
9April 29th, 2010 – The Para-cycling Eastern
Development camp concluded last week-end on another
positive note for the National Program.
The camp provided specific coaching and training sessions
to 9 development riders who attended their first National
Training camp. For the occasion, Team Mechanic, Patrick
Gauthier joined the camp for one day, adjusting all
the bicycles and work particularly on two new tricycles:
Shelley Gauthier, looking at becoming the first Female
trike rider to represent Canada in an International
event and young Louis-Albert Corriveau, discovering
para-cycling after suffering an accident only three
years ago. Myriam Adam, also a very young hand-cyclist
was able to ride for the first time a proper hand-cycle
that Patrick adjusted specifically to her measurements.
Thank you to the Fédération québécoise
des sports cyclistes and the Association québécoise
des sports en fauteuil roulant for lending the equipment.
Another highlight of the camp was the contribution
of nutritionist, Martin Fréchette. Marc David
and Charles Moreau, current para-cyclists looking at
reaching the National Team rank, learned precious nutrition
tips that will certainly have a direct impact on their
upcoming performances. Last but not least, Mark Ledo,
hand-cyclist coming from Track and field had the opportunity
to learn about the specific of the sport and how to
adjust his training prescription accordingly. Tandem
Carrier-Dionne joined for the week-end, adding some
specific training sessions to their training routine
while, new blind and visually impaired athlete, Geza
Fenyo, showed great motivation to start racing.
The camp also featured a “Selection Pilot”
activity where two Senior 1-2 athletes, Maxime Vives
and Jean-Sébastien Perron, had the opportunity
to learn about Tandem racing and practice their “driving”
skills! Both of them left motivated and enthusiasts
about becoming training partners to current visually
impaired athletes and about para-cycling in general.
National Team, Development and upcoming para-cyclists
will compete this week-end at their first race of the
season, the Défi Sportif, being held in Montreal
on May 1 and 2.
Good luck to all!
