07.02.11 - CANADIAN CATHARINE PENDREL TAKES WORLD CUP VICTORY ON HOME SOIL
Pendrel, riding for Team Luna, wins first World Cup race of 2011 season as Canadian women shine

(Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC – July 2, 2011) After almost one month break from the 2011 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup tour, Canadian cyclist Catharine Pendrel of Team Luna Pro took the top honours of the Women’s cross-country race in front of thousands of cheering fans in Mont-Sainte-Anne, near Québec City this afternoon.

On a beautiful sunny day, Pendrel rode the five laps course for a total distance of 22.8 kilometres in a time of 1:38:23 to capture her first title of the season. Pendrel, who had a slower start, rejoined the lead group on the second lap and took full control of the race. Helped by her teammates, Pendrel maintained the lead the entire race, keeping good distances and time gaps with her chasers.

Pendrel, the 2010 World Cup champion, now sits in second place of the 2011 UCI World Cup standings, with 720 points, behind French rider Julie Bresset who came third in today’s race, crashing twice on the treacherous Beatrice descent

Local sensation and mountain bike veteran Marie-Hélène Prémont, riding for Team Maxxis-Rocky Mountain, wowed her home crowd by finishing fifth with a time deficit of 2:36 over Pendrel’s winning time. Prémont, who announced this spring she will be extending her career to qualify for the 2012 Games in London, showed that she is still very capable of being part of the elite group.

In the men’s race, Canada’s Goeff Kabush, representing Team Maxxis-Rocky Mountain, finished seventh of the Men’s Elite race, posting his best result of the season so far. Kabush raced the 27.3-kilometer course with a time gap of just over four minutes over the winning time of 1:31:55 accomplished by Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic, the current leader of the 2011 World Cup Tour.

In the U23 race, Canada’s Mikaela Kofman, ranked 15th in the World, finished seventh of the women’s race, while Léandre Bouchard cracked the Top 10 in tenth position in the men’s race.
