01.04.07 - Press Release

Ottawa, ON, January 4, 2007 - The Canadian Cycling Association is pleased to communicate its 2007 national calendar of events for road, track, BMX and mountain bike. The number and quality of events held across Canada in 2007, added to the growing number of national and international Canadian cycling teams, show the good health of the sport of cycling, which is growing in popularity.

Road
Among the major road cycling events this year, the Montreal Women's UCI World Cup is coming back on June 2nd, followed by the Tour du Grand Montreal, June 4 to 7. Another ''classical'' race to the calendar, the Tour de Beauce will be presented on June 12-17.

New this year, the Tour of Prince Edward Island (Tour of PEI), a new UCI Women's cycling race will be held June 10-14, as well as the Montreal/Boston Tour, from August 5 to 12, both organized by the Montreal Women's UCI World Cup and the Tour du Grand Montréal event organizer (headed by Daniel Manibal). For its 39th presentation, the Tour de l'Abitibi will be organized from July 17 to 22, following the Tim Hortons National Championships event, held July 7-15.

Track
On the track side, the two major Tim Hortons National Championships events will be hosted again by the sites which organized them successfully in 2006: Bromont, QC, July 2-5 for the junior, master, handisport categories and Dieppe, NB September 5-9 for the elite categories.

BMX
2007 will be a fantastic season for BMX in Canada, culminating with the hosting of the UCI BMX World Championships in Victoria, BC. The BMX season will open on May 26th with the UCI International competition in Victoria, BC, followed by the Tim Hortons National Championships moving East to the Bromont, QC venue June 30-July 1 (just before the Track Nationals event), a site offering brand new BMX facilities. The Crabtree, QC venue will host the UCI International on July 7th, to conclude with the presentation of the UCI BMX World Championships in Victoria, BC from July 26-29.

As BMX evolves to its new Olympic status in 2008, the 2007 Championships will be one of the most important championships ever. Results in Victoria will help determine country rankings and athlete participation numbers for the sport's Olympic debut in Beijing in 2008. Over 2500 competitors from 40 nations and over are expected to attend.

Mountain Bike
The mountain bike 2007 Canadian calendar of events consists of 14 events starting mid-May to end on August 8. The season opens with a series of 5 Quebec and Canada Cups, the Ontario Cup in June, culminating with the Mountain Bike UCI World Cup held in Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC (in the three disciplines of downhill, 4-cross, cross-country) for the 16th consecutive year. The Province of British Columbia will take the relay to host the following mountain bike events of the season, including three BC-Canada Cups and two National Championships events in Mount Washington: the cross-country competition (July 21-22) and the downhill competition (August 4-5).
