05.01.06 - Cyclists Curt Harnett and Pierre Harvey Inducted to the 2006 Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame
Québec City, May 1, 2006 – Three-time Olympic medallist Ontario's Curt Harnett and two-sport Olympian Pierre Harvey from Québec were inducted in the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame last Saturday.

Harnett and Harvey have each been inducted in the athlete category together with Olympic swimmer Sylvie Frechette, the 1920 Winnipeg Falcons in the team category, as well as Dr. Douglas Clement and Maurice Gagné as a coach and builder respectively.

"The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) is particularly proud to have Curt Harnett and Pierre Harvey ranked among the athletes inducted in the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame," said CCA President Dr. Pierre W. Blanchard. "Both showcased their talent through outstanding performances, great sporting values and they are now a source of inspiration for the younger generations. They truly deserve the highest level of recognition."

The Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame recognizes those who have served the cause of the Olympic Movement with distinction. The induction ceremony was hosted by Olympic diving gold medallist Sylvie Bernier and cyclist Curt Harnett, who is also a talented speaker.

Curt Harnett (Thunder Bay, ON), was silver medallist (1,000 metres) at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and bronze medallist (sprint) at both the 1992 (Barcelona) and 1996 (Atlanta) Olympic Games. He took part in four Olympic Games and he is the only Canadian cyclist to have won three Olympic medals. Also a two-time (1995 and 1990) World Champion silver medallist, he set a record of under 10 seconds in the 200-metre time trial during the 1995 World Championship event in Bogota, Colombia. A record that remains unbeaten. Harnett continues to remain highly active in the Canadian sport community.

Pierre Harvey (Rimouski, QC), is a great cyclist and cross-country skier. He the first male athlete from Québec to participate in both the Olympic and Olympic Winter Games in the same year. Pierre Harvey recorded a total of three top-15 finishes during his Olympic career. A four-time Olympian, Harvey competed in cycling in the 1976 and 1984 Olympic Games. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport and, as he recalled during the ceremony, he always fighted to race clean.

Maurice Gagné (Charlesbourg, QC), started his sporting career as a cyclist before being fully involved in speed skating.
