05.17.06 - Coupe de la Paix (Peace Cup): a new major event on the CCAS's national calendar of events
Ottawa, ON, May 17, 2006 - The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) is proud to celebrate the new presentation of the Coupe de la Paix (Peace Cup), a stage road cycling race, now included in the national rankings. First created following the 911 (New York city) and March 2004 (Madrid) events, this one-of-a-kind competition is back in June for a third consecutive year, a true gathering of the Canadian elite cyclists.
"We're very happy to see our national calendar grow with quality events like the Course de la Paix. This series of five criterium events will be a great opportunity for Canadian athletes wishing to compete in an original format of racing, and it will be a true challenge with Canadian elite and international riders competing," said Kris Westwood, CCA's Director, High Performance Programs.
The best Canadian road cyclists (men and women) will have the chance to take part in the five criterium competitions held in the greater Montreal area (Laval, Mascouche, Blainville) during the Saint-John-The-Baptist weekend, from June 22 to 26. They will therefore have the opportunity to participate in the Tour de Beauce first the weekend before (June 13-18), then to the Tim Hortons Road Nationals in Québec (June 29-July 2), thus increasing the quality of the peloton.
The CCA would like to congratulate the Organizing Committee which succeeded in boosting this event with a total of $60,000 in prize money - $10,000 at each event - and the TV broadcasting of the Coupe de la Paix on RDS (Sports Network), a great way to showcase the sport of cycling in Canada.
We wish the organizers best success with the event!
