05.29.06 - Montréal Women's Road Cycling World Cup: Canada's Erinne Willock (BC) 6th
Ottawa, May 29, 2006 (Sportcom et ACC) - Olympic Vice Champion German Judith Arndt (T-Mobile) won the ninth presentation of the Montréal Women's Cycling World Cup Saturday. The winner and former World Champion completed the 100.7-kilometre race in three hours 11 minutes 52 seconds, edging out Britain's Nicole Cooke (Univega), current leader of the World Cup rankings, and American Kristin Armstrong (Lipton).
Erinne Willock (Webcor-Platinium) of Victoria (BC) was the top Canadian in sixth, 13 seconds back. Sue Palmer-Komar of Hamilton (ON) was seventh, 19 seconds off the pace. And Alex Wrubleski (Regina, SK) took a great 12th place.
Audrey Lemieux (of Alma, member of the Québec Team) finished in 47th place, at 13min 41s de Arndt. Chez les autres Québécoises, Anne Samplonious (Biovail) a fini 22e (à 59s), Stéphanie Bourbeau (Biovail) 38e (à 10min 16s) et Johanne Cyr (équipe du Québec) 39e (à 12min 05s).
Said Kris Westwood, High Performance Director for the Canadian Cycling Association: "The women's World Cup in Montreal was a great race for the spectators this year, and Canadian athletes stepped up to fill the void left by Lyne Bessette's retirement. Erinne Willock confirmed she is a world-class athlete and Sue Palmer-Komar's ride shows she still can compete with the best. Most encouraging of all was newcomer Alex Wrubleski's 12th place. At just 22 years of age she has a bright future ahead of her."
The Montréal World Cup is now followed by the Tour du Grand Montréal, held until June 1st. For more information, visit http://www.world-cup-cycling.org.
