05.29.06 - Mountain Bike - Cross-country UCI World Cup, Fort William, Scotland: Canada's Prémont Won Silver.
Ottawa, May 29, 2006 - Canada's Marie-Hélène Prémont (Château-Richer, Québec, Team Rocky Mountain Business Objects), won silver last Saturday at Scotland's Fort William cross-country UCI World Cup on Saturday.

"I'm happy. I've had a great day, despite the bad conditions like the cold and the rain," said Prémont.

Germany's Nina Göhl (Multivan Merida) took the victory in 2:4:19. Prémont was second at 1'11mn, while Russia's Irina Kalentieva completed the podium, at 2'20mn.

The athlete from Château-Richer (QC), who earned her second mountain bike World Cup medal this season in less than 7 days - after taking the bronze at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium last weekend, - was riding a steady pace at the front for the majority of the race, within an inch of taking the gold. Favorite Germany's Gunn-Rita Dahle (Multivan Merida), placed 4th despite a flat which had relegated her from the lead to the 40th position or so at the second lap. The two riders behind Prémont rode together until Nina Gôhl seized an opportunity to pass her. "I thought I would be able to manage and keep the lead, but I was struggling against strong winds, and could not resist."

Alison Sydor (North Vancouver, BC - Rocky Mountain-Business Objects) rode a consistent race just behind the top-10, finishing 13th, followed by Kiara Bisaro (Courtenay, BC - Team R.A.C.E.) in 15th and Wendy Simms (Nanaimo, BC - Kona Velo Bella) in 16th. Simms was taken down in a crash in the first 100 metres of the race, and spent the day chasing up through the field.

On the men's field, France's Julien Absalon took his 4th consecutive gold medal, followed by Spain's Jose Antonio Hermida and Switzerland's Florian Vogel. Canada's Seamus McGrath (Canadian National-Felt Bicycles - Victoria, BC) rode a consistent race to finish 18th, while Geoff Kabush (Maxxis - Victoria, BC) finished 46th.

Prémont has now climbed 3rd in the UCI rankings after four of the six 2006 World Cups.

Next UCI cross-country World Cup stage will be presented in Canada, at the Mont-Sainte-Anne venue, on Sunday June 25, during the Velirium Festival (June 10-25): www.velirium.com.
