06.13.06 - Tour de Beauce Top Canadian Cyclists: Mark Walters, ON (13d) and Jean-Sébastien Maheu, QC (14th). An Ukrainian wins the 1st stage of the Tour de Beauce.
Ottawa, ON - June 13, 2006 - Today started the first stage of the 21 presentation of the Tour de Beauce, with Mark Walters (Peterborough, ON) and Jean-Sébastien Maheu (Montréal, QC) at the top of the North American rankings together with Danny Patte (USA) in 7th.

The 21st edition of the Tour de Beauce started with a 164-km stage in Lac-Etchemin (South shore of Québec) today. 139 riders from 22 teams, including four teams from Europe, one of Asia, three from Oceania, two from South America, five from the United States and seven from Canada showcased a beautiful performance, forecasting an exciting event until June 18.

Around km 110, the decisive attack of four riders began. The quartet made up of Mexico's Fausto Esparza Munoz (Tecos-trek), Germany's Stefan Parinussa (TEAM Sparkasse), Ukraine's Valery Kobzarenko and Uzbekistan's Sergei Lagutin, both of the American team Navigators Insurance, quickly set a lead culminating at 3 minutes at only 5 km from the arrival.

At this moment, Kobzarenko outdistanced the chase group near Lac-Etchemin, where he crossed the finish line in a time of 3hre 49min 48sec, cheered up by hundreds of spectators.

At the end of the stage, Kobzarenko thus holds a lead of 23s seconds on its nearer rival, Mexico's Munoz, second of the stage. Top Canadians Mark Walters (Peterborough, ON - Navigators Insurance) and Jean-Sebastien Maheu (Montréal, QC -Team of Quebec) finished respectively 13th and 14th, at 2min 43sec of the winner.

Wednesday, the riders will complete a 180km-stage, departing from and arriving at St-Joseph.
