06.30.06 - Tim Hortons National Road Cycling Championships - Elite Women's & Junior Road Race Second National Champion title in a row for Saskatchewan's Alexandra Wrubleski!
Québec's Carol-Ann Kanuel and Ontario's Mark Hinnen win the Junior race

Québec City, June 30 2006 - Alexandra Wrubleski (Team H&R Block) of Regina, Saskatchewan achieved an exceptional performance today by taking a second National Champion title in a row, winning the road raceafter the time-trial yesterday. Québec's Anne Samplonius (Montréal, Team Biovail) comes in second and Ontario's Leigh Hobson (Victory Brewing) in third.

The three National team cyclists were in a breakaway from lap 3, together with British

Columbia's Erinne Willock (Webcor Platinium). "We worked together in the break the four of us. We kept a fast pace from the beginning - there was an important gap with the 25- rider peloton, commented Wrubleski. I felt very good in the uphill parts, fresher than the other girls, so I attacked in the final lap. I knew I had made it, but I did not know that Anne (Samplonius) was so close to me in the sprint."

When asked if she realized that she had won the National Champion title twice, Wrubleski added: "Yes I do realize it and I'm very happy about it. I thought I would feel more tired, especially after the intense training achieved in the past couple of weeks, but I was very well prepared for the National Championships. It worked out for me." Her partners were certainly happy to learn that she will no more race speed skating, but focus on cycling.

Québec's Amanda Lee Cocks (Team Cenda Tires) and Émilie Roy (Saint-Cuthbert, QC) were the second best Quebecers of the women elite race in fourth and 17th positions respectively. Audrey Lemieux (Alma, QC) who was recently diagnosed as anemic,   finished the race in 27th, after confessing it was a true struggle, but felt good enough to continue and even chase the leader group at one time.

In the Junior Women race held in the morning, the great Équipe du Québec hopeful Carol-Ann Kanuel took the lead from the beginning and won the race with a time of 2:14:52, 5'39" ahead of Team Alberta's Danielle Kenny and Québec's Shanie Bergeron (Espoir de Laval), same time.

Mark Hinnen (Oakville, ON) took the National Champion title in the Junior Men, with a time of 2:40:14, followed by Alexander Korten from Manitoba at 1:14 and Vincent Blouin (Équipe du Québec) at 1:24.
