07.27.06 - Paralympic Cycling Team Performs Great in the Road Race
July 23, 2006 – Slovakia – Canada’s National IPC Team member Jean Quévillion Ste-Adele, QC), takes the 3rd place overall today in the road race event. Montreal’s Mark Beggs and Rico Morneau earned 2d and 3rd respectively, while Québec’s Éric Bourgault and Mark Breton finished 1st and 6th in their category.
The road race took place on a 9 K course today, in the same Vratna National Park where IPC National Team riders made it for the podium on Saturday at the time trial event.
Jean Quévillion (Sainte-Adèle, QC) and Brayden McDougall (Calgary, AB) raced amongst the LC 3 & 4 categories over a 36 K race. Quévillion was a key player after McDougall was forced outside and into the gravel where he fell.. In the end, Quévillion rode in for 3rd overall and 2nd in the CP 3/LC 4 race. Germany’s Michael Teuber took first in the final sprint. McDougall rode solo eventually chasing down 3rd place but the long solo effort paid a price, and in the final lap he lost about 3 places, putting him in 6th place among the CP3/LC4 race.
The hill in this course was a challenge for every paralympic division, the most impressive athletes being the CP 2 and HC A. The HC race combined A-B-C divisions on the course together, with a podium for each class afterwards. In the Hand Cycle race, Mark Beggs (Montreal, QC) rode another respectable race placing 2nd a few minutes a head of Rico Morneau (Montreal, QC) for 3rd.
Quebec’s Mark Breton (Charlesbourg) and Eric Bourgault (Orford) rode together with the men's Tandem Race. Breton completed the road race in 6th place and Bourgault came in 1st in his category. This race was also a mixed category race, including LC 1, 2 and CP 4.
Note that 70 athletes from 7 nations, including six Canadian National Team members, were racing in the time trial and road race events this weekend, in categories that included Amputee (LC), Cerebral Palsey (CP), Hand Cycling (HC) and Visually Impaired.
The Canadian Paralympic Cycling Team, headed by coach Stephen Burke, is now getting prepared for another European Cup next weekend in Munich, Germany.
