07.29.06 - Samantha Cools (AB) Takes Silver at UCI BMX World Championships in Brazil today
Sao Paulo, Brazil, Saturday July 29 - Samantha Cools (Airdrie, AB) has won silver in the Elite Women cruiser category today. Canada's Peter Jensen (Maple Ridge, BC) repeated as World Challenge Cruiser Champion in the 45 and over category.
Six members of the Junior & Elite BMX National Team were competing in the Championship cruiser category this afternoon, and Sam Cools, top Women Elite in the National rankings, made Canada's best performance of the Worlds with a silver medal:
- Kaila Sweeney (Calgary, AB) and Layne Nyhaug (Port Coquitlam BC), both Junior Women
- Jimmy Brown (Airdrie, AB) in the Junior Men
- Samantha Cools (Airdrie, AB) in the Elite Women
- Scott Erwood (Abbotsford, BC) and Kevin Hill (Vernon, BC), both Elite Men
Today after three rounds of motos, Junior Women went right to semi finals of numbers, Junior Men went right to quarter finals, Elite Women went right to semi finals and Elite Men went right to quarter finals. Top four in each round at this point continued to move on all the way to finals.
In the Championship category, Jimmy Brown (Airdrie, AB) qualified to 1/4 finals in the Junior Men category, but finished 6th and was eliminated.
In the Elite Men category, Scott Erwood (Abbotsford, BC) and Kevin Hill (Vernon BC) did not qualify for 1/4 finals.
Kaila Sweeney (Calgary, AB) did not qualify for the Junior Women semi-final, while Layne Nyhaug (Port Coquitlam, BC), crashed in her semi-final.
