08.06.06 - New Canadian record set for Smith (Calgary, AB)

August 6, 2006 (Gent, Belgium) - Eric Smith (AB) set a new Canadian record in the Junior Track Worlds 3000m pursuit event today, while Monique Sullivan (both from Calgary, AB) takes the 11th in the 500m time trial Saturday and the 9th place in the 200m time trial today.

Day 2 – session 3

Eric Smith (Calgary, AB) took the 13th place in the UCI Junior Track Worlds 3000m pursuit qualification round today. He set a new Canadian record with a time of 3:27:390.
The winner of the pursuit competition is Australia’s Cameron Meyer, with a time of 3:18.666, at less than one second from the world record, followed by two cyclists from New-Zealand. Smith said he was very satisfied with his performance.

Monique Sullivan (Calgary, AB) qualified in 6th in the 200m time trial event, with an excellent time of 12:017. She was eliminated in the 1/8 finals by Australia’s Kaarle McCulloch and finally earned the 9th position. She said she "gave it all what she could."

Sullivan also finished 11th in Saturday night’s 500m time trial event (day 1 – session 2), with a time of 37.297. France’s Sandie Clair took the gold with a time of 35.223, and Ukrainian Lubov Shulyka earned the silver, with a time of 35.367.

"The times set by the Junior Women at the 500m time trial race are truly impressive," said Vincent Jourdain, road and track coach for the Canadian National Team.

Sullivan earned the third best time in the Junior- first year category. She said: "I couldn’t believe having my time beaten by all the girls one after another, the level is really high and I am satisfied with my first experience at the Worlds anyway. " She will also take part in the 200m sprint and keirin.

Lawrence Leroux (Oka, QC) ended 18th in the 1000m time trial event today. He was very disappointed, but he expects doing much better tomorrow at the 200m sprint competition.
