08.13.06 - Karol-Ann Canuel (Amos, QC) 5th in the Road Race Event

August 13, 2006 (Spa Francorchamps, Belgium) - Karol-Ann Canuel (Amos, QC) took the 5th position in the women’s 68 Kroad race event today at the UCI Junior Road World Championships, with a time of 2:01:16. She was part of a group of 15 riders who made it for the final sprint at the same time. Lituania’s Rasa Leleivyte slightly took the advantage for first place at the very end. She was followed by Italy’s Marina Romoli (2d) and Eleonora Patuzzo (3rd). Netherlands’ Linda Van Rijen earned the fourth position, with Québec’s Karol-Ann Canuel finishing right behind her.

Danielle Kenny, of Calgary, AB, finished in a second group at 4:24 minutes for the 55th place at the end of the five laps of the 13.6 K race course.

"Karol-Ann is very much satisfied with her race, even if she expected to be closer to the lead at the end to make it for the podium," said Vincent Jourdain, Canadian Cycling Association’s road and track coach.

In the Men’s category, Italy’s Diego Ulissi won the 122.4 K road race event, followed by Denmark’s Niki Ostergaard at 0:00:09 and France’s Tony Galopin, same time, in third position. William Goodfellow (Laval, QC) placed 102 and top Canadian. Other Canadians Mark Hinnen (ON), Alexander Korten (ON), Charlie Bryer (ON) and Guillaume Boivin (QC) did not finish.
